PAUL GILBERT IN CONCERT AT TREVISO
Alternate Picking (and beyond)

Paul Gilbert. Big projects have led to his reputation as one of the finest rock guitarists in the world. The guitar hero U.S. is the New Age Club Roncade (TV) tonight, with a strong and excellent album to promote, an excellent band, and the usual audience sympathy.

Now he has left behind Addicted To That Rush, and other successes achieved as guitarist of Mr. Big, Paul Gilbert has found in his solo career ideal size. Yet, the feeling is that the boy from Carbondale is constantly looking for something new: Only in 2006 did his career turn towards instrumental music with the irreverent album Get Out Of My Yard. The recent offering Silence Followed By A Deafening Roar, confirmed his ability, and the inspiration of an artist who in so many have flocked today.

The concert is opened by good Italian guitarist Gianni Rojatti, and the band that will accompany the Dolcetti. His band folded to completely prevent those present to appreciate better the show, whose station and enthusiasm is appropriate to the event. To note, this band had the excellent bassist Alberto Rigoni, a member of Twinspirits.

When you add in the “salt” of Paul Gilbert, all of these guitarists are a positive light, and the event is very savory and tasty as perceived. Paul comes onstage with traditional headphones, part of his style which he is increasingly identified.

The first tracks played are taken from Get Out Of My Yard: among all, impresses the wonderful Curse Of Castle Dragon, a masterpiece of technique and melody. The entire concert is focused on his instrumental repertoire, to the delight of the many musicians in the audience who listen. Paul is in full form: He failed to become muddy, despite the difficulty implementing his tracks in concert. Already, the songs: As like the concert, beyond delicious and fully within the ability of Gilbert, they stand on their own. The guitarist loves “the song form, and structure of his compositions, and marked by themes rather than endless solos. Of course, the listeners do not regret when the former Mr. Big guitarist tossed in some effects and alternate string tapping the fretboard (listen to Eudaimonia Overture to believe). Many are at New Age Club for this. The concert, however, does not ever take the path of posturing and egotism, much to the delight of guitarists and and non-guitarists alike.

The band that accompanies the guitar hero deserves a special mention: the drummer Jeff Bowders and bassist Craig Martini are excellent, and are never trivial. Paul’s wife Emi Gilbert, whose presence on keyboards adds a high note to the thousands minced by Paul, is precious in accompaniments and in impeccable keyboard-guitar duets.

This is a memorable night, with Paul even trying out the microphone: there is room for Red House of Hendrix, the Viking Kong Racer X, his Down To Mexico, and the show’s closer Long Live Rock by the Who, with a quote from Bargain. None of Mr. Big was played, which reminds us to remember that Paul Gilbert is really great by himself, and as such not just a member of a rock band from history.
