Here’s some interesting trivia for you. Paul rarely seems to get involved with “music as a competition”. He is a very dedicated music teacher and from what I have read (quotes of his) – he really doesn’t like to view music as a competition at all. He views it as a pure & creative art. So you can imagine my surprise when I found this contest he judged!
The 3rd place winner got a copy of his new CD “Acoustic Samurai” so this is not new – it’s from 2003.

Guitar Center en GitaarNet presents the RIFF CONTEST!
The result of the RIFF CONTEST is known! Jury chairman ‘Paul Gilbert’ puts an end to all tension and announces the three winners!
.
Text (Paul Gilbert speaking):
“I have been given the job of listening to some guitar solos, choosing my 3 favorites, and writing my opinions of them. So here we go.
My favorites are:
1. “Fuz_Meets_the_herd” by Bosch
2. “Chase” by Joris Bos
3. “Funky fingers” by Boudewijn
Bosch gets right to the point and lays down some serious rock-fusion licks in the first few seconds. His tone reminds me of John Scofield, but with some metal influences in the distorted guitar sound. I really like his mix of picking and legato sounds, and his choice of notes is really interesting. The second half of the solo is more Steve Vai-ish with some fast runs and Vai-ish phrases. And then, having said what he needed to say, Bosch quits while he’s ahead and let’s the bass solo take it to the finish.
Fuz_meets_the_Herd – Bosch
Joris Bos has the best and LOUDEST guitar sound of any of these solos. I also love his vibrato. And that’s IMPORTANT. If I needed another guitarist for a touring band, I’ll probably pick Joris because of the clarity and power of his playing and tone and his awesome vibrato. He’s not as flashy as the other guys, but I love the sound of his fingers.
Chase – JorisBos
Boudewijn starts off with some safe but good funk rhythm, then adds a melody with a kind of thin auto-wah sound. I didn’t have great expectations after this, but wait… then a killer metal solo comes out of nowhere! Great tone, phrasing, vibrato, super clean licks. Wow! Uh-oh, then it’s back to the duck-call sound. then a fantastic fusion section and some masterful licks worked out to go with the bass guitar solo. This guy plays really well, he just needs to stick the good stuff at the beginning of the song to get the listener’s attention.
Funky fingers – Boudewijn
So who do I choose to win the Pod?
I’m going to go with Bosch. He put his good stuff at the beginning and got my attention with just one listen. Joris and Boudewijn are fantastic guitarists as well, and the more I listened to them, the more depth and musicality I found. But Bosch hooked me immediately, so I have to go with my first impression.
I hope all you guys keep playing guitar and have lots of fun and success!
Thank you,
Paul”
